If you have not started working on your yard this year, you are late. Luckily, it is not too late, but you will want to get a few things done ASAP! Continue reading to see what 3 things you must do now.
#1. TURN ON YOUR WATER
If you do not start watering your lawn now it will suffer damage. If you start soon, it will be minor and may only take a year to fully recover. If you wait too long, it will be irreparable. We have seen posts from government agencies encouraging people to wait to water. Have you ever seen the government-run anything efficiently? We have not, so do not trust a government agency to give you advice about when and how to water unless you want your lawn to be as unhealthy and inefficient as the government. We are not saying to overdo it, but you will need at least 1-2 good waterings per week while temperatures are in the 60s and 70s if you want to high a great lawn in Cedar City.
#2. – Apply Fertilizer
Most nonprofessionally cared for lawns are nutrient deprived. One fertilizer application a year is not sufficient. Do you wonder why your lawn is thin, patchy, has bugs, allows dandelions to grow, and is not 100% lush green, especially when the summer heat hits? 99% of these problems are due to lack of proper fertilization and poor watering. Fix your fertilizer and water issues and your lawn will be the envy of the neighborhood. Also, do not buy fertilizer from Home Depot or some other chain. If you are using a product such as Scotts you may as well burn your money; which will at least provide some entertainment and warmth. In our own research and developmental trials, where we pushed the label recommendations to the max, we did not see grass “burning” until multiple times the label amount was applied. A bag of IFA Step 1 23-3-8 fertilizer means it is 23% nitrogen, 3% phosphate, 8% potassium per 100 lbs. Therefore a 50 lb. bag is actually 12.5% nitrogen, 1.5% phosphate, 4% potassium, and 82% innate matter such as sand!! That is why those bags are so heavy!! Do not pay $30 for a bag of sand!
#3. – Get Rid of any weeds
Any weeds in your yard currently will be the parents of millions more if they are not taken care of. If you do not take care of them now, you will pay dearly later. Although you may curse Mother Eve as you pull each one, just think that by so doing you will prevent 100s or 1000s more throughout the year. If you do not like pulling them then at least spray them. Use glyphosate and wipe them out! (We do not care what the state of California thinks!)

No one wants to be the neighbor the rest of the neighborhood gossips about due to how trashy their yard looks, nor do you want to be the subject of the local youth group’s next service project.
